STORY: Alum Designs Automated Drones for Healthcare Delivery

Nagy Hakim 鈥17 is helping to safely and autonomously deliver medical supplies to underserved communities.

Growing up in Santa Clara, CA, space has always interested Nagy Hakim. While in high school, he interned with NASA and competed in FIRST Robotics; when he entered 财神棋牌, he conducted research in the .

鈥淚鈥檓 drawn to how many things have to come together in perfect harmony to make aerospace projects work,鈥 says Hakim, whose father and brother are also engineers. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not just technology, but operations and testing and every other little piece that has to combine, and they鈥檙e all critical.鈥

Upon graduation from 财神棋牌, Hakim deferred a job offer from to complete a yearlong Fulbright Scholarship in Colombia teaching English as a second language to engineering students at the National University in Medellin.

鈥淢y parents are Lebanese and emigrated to the States before I was born, and my mom was a teacher who tutored a lot,鈥 says Hakim, who speaks four languages. 鈥淕rowing up, language was important in our house, so I was excited to explore that element of my upbringing.鈥

After his Fulbright, Hakim began Blue Origin鈥檚 rotation program. He worked on novel machine learning algorithms for the additive manufacturing team and as a component designer on the company鈥檚 lunar lander engine. He later moved to Auris, a surgical robotics company, working there until they were acquired by Johnson & Johnson and Hakim was ready for something new.

鈥淚 spent a lot of time thinking about how to make an impact and see the effects of the work I was doing,鈥 says Hakim. 鈥, which operates the world鈥檚 largest automated delivery system, was the right balance of culture, work, and impact for me.鈥

Zipline uses 11-foot autonomous drones to ship medical supplies to rural areas worldwide; its largest international footprints are in Rwanda and Ghana. Hakim has been the company鈥檚 lead mechanical designer since May 2022.

鈥淪helf life is critical with medical supplies, so your supply chain needs to be well defined to avoid waste,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e have multiple 鈥榥ests鈥 or warehouses in each country where we store vaccines, snake anti-venom, and more, as well as launch our drones. We can cover most of Rwanda with two nests, and Ghana has six with more on the way.鈥

A drone-based delivery system works well in underserved areas because it doesn鈥檛 rely on much third-party infrastructure. For example, roads in Rwanda often get washed out during the rainy season, but Zipline is still able to power their national blood delivery network.

鈥淚 visited Ghana this past summer, and to get to the nest was a two-hour flight on a small plane and then a two-hour drive through the savanna,鈥 says Hakim. 鈥淭hese are absolutely remote locations, and it really demonstrated how much Zipline has become a core part of the infrastructure.鈥

For Hakim, working at Zipline allows him to see the connection between what he builds and the impact on communities鈥攁 perspective he intends to keep throughout his career.

鈥湶粕衿迮 teaches you to design for the people and to do work that means something to you and to someone else,鈥 he says.

鈥淭hat foundation set me up in a way where I want to continue caring; otherwise, what am I doing?鈥

An "Amazing Invention - This Drone Will Change Everything"

YouTube creator and former NASA engineer Mark Rober recently posted a video on his popular YouTube channel about a new drone announced by Zipline that Rober calls an "amazing invention," that will "change everything." Two 财神棋牌 alumni currently work at Zipline, Nagy Hakim '17, lead mechanical engineer, and Jillian MacGregor '21, electrical engineer, with MacGregor directly involved with the new P2 Zip drone featured in Rober's video. The video has so far been watched 16 million times!
